Ecoprod

Ecoprod is the leading initiative on sustainable film production in France, promoting and highlighting films and crews working towards reducing the environmental footprint of the film and TV industry.

The audiovisual and film sector releases millions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year, and generates a growing amount of waste and pollution. Because it conveys messages and shapes collective representations, this industry has a particular responsibility in raising ecological awareness. It must therefore be exemplary in its production methods and creative workflows.

Ecoprod is a non-profit association created in 2009 whose ambition is to support the environmental transition of the film and TV industry. The founding members of Ecoprod are Audiens, the CST, Film Paris Region and the broadcasters Canal +, France TV and TF1.

Ecoprod brings together more than 280 companies representing all industry stakeholders: production companies, broadcasters, service providers, unions, film schools and public institutions. As an independant platform for cooperation and exchange, the association is pushing the subject of green production on a national and international level.

Ecoprod is also a ressource center providing free tools for the film and TV industry such as Carbon'Clap, a carbon calculator certified by the CNC, green production guides, studies etc. It recently launched the Ecoprod Label with Afnor Certification (first films to be certified this summer). Ecoprod also provides training in green production for film professionals and students.

BACKGROUND AND ACTIONS

In 2010, the collective developed the first carbon footprint calculator dedicated to audiovisual productions, Carbon'Clap. In 2012 the eco-production guide, a tool to promote environmentally friendly audiovisual productions was presented in Cannes. A partnership was initiated with the company Eco-Act to enable producers to offset emissions with the rigor required for voluntary compensation. In 2013, the collective focused more particularly on waste management in the industry and conducted a study with the support of DIRECCTE. In 2014, the collective launched the "ECOPROD Agreement for the audiovisual company" to engage signatory companies in a continuous improvement process of information, reflection, and implementation, framed and helped by the tools and services made available by the collective. In 2015, the COP 21 was an opportunity to organize events and round tables around Ecoprod's approach by partnering with FILM4CLIMATE.

In 2018, the collective set up the Ecoprod Pass with Audiens, a training course to raise awareness on eco-filming among production managers and directors, as well as the 5 action sheets by profession, in collaboration with associations of audiovisual professionals. It has also joined the international GreenScreen program and is present at major industry events such as the Cannes Film Festival, the Deauville Green Awards, the Production Forum and numerous conferences and round tables in France and Europe.
